The next update is about what how our new MECHANICAL dishwasher looks fully installed and how wonderful it is.

Spot light on our new pet

In celebration of the break in the heat wave that hit the east coast the last few days, I  decided to take a break from writing about the chickens and focus on a pet I mentioned very briefly a few posts ago, our bunny, Vivian.

We got her a last week because my sisters wanted one and mom had no objections. She’s a dwarf bunny and she going to say about this size, growing up to three pounds.

D'awwww so cute

She is also the most adorablist thing I have ever seen.

Vivian been by herself mostly but we want to try to get her to interact with the chickens and hopefully the dogs.    Today we let her interact with the flock, and she reacted the same way if you saw a giant bird twice your size.

What's not shown is that Vivian running away from the chicken

so i guess that makes her a chicken Bunny!

Some like it HOT, most don’t

So the east coast was greeted by a heat wave these past two days.

You know the expression, “hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk”? I was planning today to see if that works, until my mom caught wind of it.

here where the picture would be...

My mother has always been against the idea of wasting an egg just for an experiment or a gag because, “ if you knew the about of energy that these chickens put into making an egg every day and a half, you would have respect for the egg too.”

So thinking of that, I searched out on the web for some alternative, more respectful, uses of eggs. And wow, there are a lot of them so I compiled a list of them, just for you guys!

Egg Glue:
Apparently the egg whites works as a great adhesive, people out there on the web say it’s great of paper and cardboard. Although I’m still sticking (get it?) to the store bought stuff.

chickens are the new horses.

If you have plants, water them with the leftover water from your boiled eggs.

When you boil an egg, the left over water hold many vitamins and nutritional substances that you can feed to your plants.

Eggplant anyone?

But the oddest one I found was one to make your coffee better, if you mix some crushed egg shells into the coffee before brewing it, it makes the drink more smoother.

I don’t drink coffee, so you, the readers, will have you go out and test this one for me. See if you notice more smoothness in your next cup, or if you just catches salmonella from it.

Nope, nope nope. This one just seems wrong.

They grow up so fast.

After Harry Potter and one hell of a weekend at the movie theater, I’m back to normal. Sunday night after a long night at the theater, attending to the needs of the many, many Harry Potter fans, I got home and peered into the chick’s nursery, to my surprise our lil’ chicks are now HUGE! Sometime between Wednesday and Sunday night these guys got big, really big

Don’t take my word for it, the proof is in the (chicken) pudding.

Last Wed:

See how small these babies are

Wow! They grown.

I swear these guys grow more than human babies, the only difference is that we don’t need to cloth them, although it wont stop my mom from wanting to cloth them.

Good bye Harry

Last night I waited 3 hours to watch a 2hours and 23 minute movie. I spent more than five hours in a movie theater waiting for one of the most anticipated movie of their childhood, Harry Potter.

Don’t cry because it ended. Smile because it happened.

FAQ of a family that owns chickens

Every time I tell people that my family raises chickens I get asked these certain questions, so this post is dedicated to answering those questions. So next time someone asks, I’ll just reply “Just read it on my blog”.

*Do you eat your chickens
No, we raised them as pets, and it would probably be traumatize us if we were served a plate full of Zelda

Zelda's just too lovable NOT to eat.

*Do roosters REALLY crow at  day  break?

Yes they do, and any other time of the day that they deem fit. They also crow when neighors are irrtaed by rooster crows.

*Who’s your favorite chicken?

The prized chicken in our flock.

*who’s your favorite chick?

I love that one, no.... That one!....NO No i love THAT one more....no wait.....

*Have you seen that episode of Dirty Jobs where he goes to a chicken farm as a Chick sexer?
No, it seems that fate / T.V listings will not allow us to watch that one episode where he goes on a chicken farm.

*What got you guys into raising chickens?
My mom is crazy

*How crazy?

Too crazy to type it all down.

Chicken Update.

Wednesday I posted that our new chicks where beginning to hatch, and we now have tennew chicks in the nursery, but all didn’t hatch as smoothly as expected  We have a miraculous story a one of them, as Thursday came around all of them pecked their way out of their shells, except one. When we started this egg hatching experiment we accepted the fact that all of them might not make it. But we heard peeping coming from the uncraked eggs, so we knew she was alive. So in an impromptu plan our family decided that we should try to help this chicken out a little, We cracked the egg and rescues her. We had to keep her in the incubator a tad longer than her siblings, and at times it looked like she wasn’t going to make it.

But she was able to pull through and she is now on track to grow up with the rest of her sibling, and we couldn’t be happier.

Yay! (she's the one in the middle)

*Sidenote: At this time we actually don’t know the sex of these chickens yet, but for all intent and purposes I will continue refer to them as females.

In unrelated news our family got a pet bunny!

Now we are one pig and two goats away form being legally a farm!

IT’S A COOKBOOK!!!

A few weeks ago I heard a rumor on the Internet that the creators of the wildly popular smart phone game, Angry Birds, which people are saying is the new Super Mario game,  was coming out with a cookbook that deals mostly eggs recipes. As I said on Twitter, #thisisanawesomeidea. I’m really happy for them for two reasons.

Firstly I’m ex- i mean-eggcited to show this to my mom who loves cookbooks, and I look forward to trying make some of these dishes myself, even though I can’t stand the taste or texture of eggs. (and yes I am aware of the irony).

on second thought....

I’m also happy to see that video games are able to transcend medias and do it so well, well enough to get the majority of the demographics who plays the game. Other games have done this too, Halo World of Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons, all popular games tried to go beyond the video games media, with books, comics, trading card games and even television shows, but none really caught on.

Even the main charters looked like nerds

I think that in the gaming world, people who play the card games or read the books are the ones that are hardcore gamers or dedicated to the game. The Angry Birds franchise is not producing books with plots and back stories on the characters (their birds that are angry, that’s you need to know.) but they are selling flipflops and celebration cards which is more appealing to their player base. This creates a new market for the gaming world, making clothes and assories to sell rather than the novels, it will be interesting how angry birds will affect the market.

Those are some angry shoes

Next post i’ll talk about our new chicks I swear.

THEY HATCHED!

This day, Wednesday the 6th, is the day that our coup grew again. As I wrote a few weeks ago in this post, my family was trying to hatch chickens from eggs, something that we haven’t done before. (link) We have always gotten chicks when they were few days old, never from scratch. Yesterday, we heard our first peep and as my EGGcited mother video tape them, and posted them online for everyone to see. (link)  First times chicken mother are always so fun to watch them coo over their babies. We have two video cameras taping their first day, but I learned that only after I baby talked to them for a few minutes….oops.

These guys been so tired from breaking out of their shells.

It will still take a few moths for these lil guys to lay eggs for us to share the people, but once they will, you will hear about it on this blog and my twitter feed.

Happy Birthday!
